Spin®-a-Thon to Raise Funds to Support Efforts to Rehabilitate War Veterans Through Cycling and Fitness Activities
SAN DIEGO – March 6, 2008 – Star Trac, the fastest-growing company in commercial fitness, is hosting the Road 2 Recovery Spin®-a-thon inside their booth (#2915) at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) 2008 tradeshow, one of the health and fitness industry’s premier events. Proceeds from Road 2 Recovery, produced by the Fitness Challenge Foundation in partnership with the VA Volunteer Service Office and sponsored by Star Trac, will support mental and physical rehabilitation programs that feature cycling and fitness as the core activity.
The conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan has taken a toll on the mental and physical lives of our nation’s heroes. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as physical injuries such as burns and loss of limbs, has lead to an array of problems for returning troops. The VA has begun to include cycling as part of their treatment programs. “Research has shown that physical activity, such as cycling, is extremely effective in combating depression in addition to the obvious physical benefits it provides,” said Steve Nero, president of Star Trac. “We are told that cycling is the one activity that patients with both mental and physical disabilities can participate in — and it has given many of the brave men and women who have served our country a sense of normalcy, accomplishment, pride, camaraderie, and relief from depression and other problems that often come up in the healing process.”
Mike Vogel, who recently starred in the blockbuster movie Cloverfield, is chair of this year’s VA Salute to Hospitalized Veterans and has committed to join disabled veterans, cycling legends, and supporters on Road 2 Recovery rides along both U.S coasts this year. He is scheduled to be a special guest rider in the Road 2 Recovery Spin®-a-Thon being held in the Star Trac booth at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 6.
“The Road 2 Recovery is in line with the overcall cause Star Trac is parenting,” said Keith White,
director of global branding for Star Trac. “We see the benefits that an increase in physical activity can make in someone’s life and we are passionate about empowering as many people as possible to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle. To think that the technology we have developed, like our revolutionary Spinner® NXT, can inspire many of our nation’s heroes on the road to recovery gives all of us at Star Trac an incredible feeling. We are proud and honored to be a sponsor of Road 2 Recovery.”
